One of my recent projects has been replicating Maersk’s promotional train from 1990.
I have the Athearn GP60M, and have placed an order for the Athearn Maxi I well cars. However, the problem comes to containers.
Those Athearn containers are expensive, even off of eBay. However, Walthers sells the same 40’ and 20’ containers that are on sale for $3.00 each…meaning that for $9 from Walthers, I get the same ammount of containers as Athearn sells for $30.
How compatiable are these together? I know Athearns’ containers are made for these cars. Will the Walthers containers work???
As long as they fit in the wells in the cars (which im reasonably sure they will) they can be made to work i would think? At 3 bucks each, buy a pair and test them out. At most your out 6 dollars.
I dunno tho…maybe i should run some double stack well cars behind my 4-8-2s[}:)]
I have a 55 car stack train using all Athearn well cars. I have mixed containers from Athearn, Walthers, and Concor with no problems. The only tiny problem is that the Concor containers have a square peg on each corner that is supposed to fit in the holes of the container below it or the well car. All of the cars and the other containers have round pegs. I just filed the pegs off of the Concor and glued them in place. Works great and have now started upgrading to some of the new cars that will accomodate the new 53 foot containers.
After a IM to my container car guy, I found out that the 40’ containers WILL fit in the Athearn Maxi Is…So, I placed an order for 2 more Maxi I sets, and 20 more containers.
