hey I bought one for solid cold cost me 80 dollars but I like it. Anyone else have one? rambo1…
Rambo1;
They have caught my eye, ever since a Member here did that with a ‘Soundbug’ -on his own, a year or two ago.
His models were impressive enough for to considder one when they are on sale.
IMHO; it must been impressive enough for the manfacturer to be impressed as well…
How often is the run/cool cycle? (i think that was one of the selling points).
Have you put it on a programming track, & does it have many DCC CV options?
I’m interested, in more info, thanks!!
I have one of each, sound and no sound. They are beautiful cars and track well, They are dual decoder and there is no CV to adjust. To adjust the sound one as to remove the roof and turn a pot. Out ot the box the sound is way too loud and I reduced it a more than 50%. The sound is a bit of a gimmick as when on a train it is very hard to notice it. However, standing still in a yard it is a nice feature . I should time how long the unit sound is on and off. To me it look like the on time is a little more than off.
It would have been nice if a CV would be available to change the sound level and the time on and off. They are on the expensive side but they are gorgeous.
A few people have done some reviews and the videos are posted on youtube. Yeah, kinda unique, but seems like something that really goes unnoticed and not worth the price.
Can’t remember the last time I was at a railroad crossing and as the train was rolling by, thought to myself “hey, those reefer units sure sound cool, gotta have one”!
but, to each his/her own…
Thanks for the feedback!
Hmm, thinking back to my early 1990s railfanning days, there was a potato distributor in the Ironbound section of Newark NJ (on Lister Ave), which used to get a decent number of Mech Reefers back in the day*.
Driving/walking by, at least one reefer was on and clattering away, sometimes more (when they were using the reefers as cold storage for the potatoes). That was noticible sound, and certainly would be a neat touch to have a sound unit hidden in the loading dock which would produce a low level refrigerator sound (cheaper too, 1 sound unit at the consignee as opposed to, say, 3 sound equiped Mech Reefers).
If you are modeling an “open air” transload (a wide paved spot along an siding where trucks back up to the reefer door and unload directly) stick the sound unit under the siding spot) - these units you could turn on and off depending if there are any reefers at the spot, and if they are supposed to have a load or not.
*BTW, just checked on Google Maps Satellite 45deg, there’s two ARMN modernized reefers (with the big roof slot to support the new truck-style refrigerator units) shown spotted at the loading dock - cool, for years there was nothing spotted there.
Actually, I was hooked on railroads and model railroading by my many encounters with the Tropicana Juice Train on the way home from my first son’s day care.
I pre-ordered one of each modern and traditional with sound just to see if they worked on DC and they do (plus 4 non-sound). Besides the sound feature I think they did a fantastic job with the tooling and details and I’m eagerly awaiting their next run
