Athearn Motor Shaft Size

I was trying to attempt to remoter an Athearn RTR P42 engine today. This motor bit the dust. Much to my surprise the stock motor’s shafts are 3.1mm in size. The A Line motor’s shafts are only 2mm. Any suggestions?

I assumed that it would be an easy fix. I guess that’s what happens when I assume something.[:I]

I’m guessing your Athearn has the newer hex-drive universals? If so, you’ll have to get some new flywheels and universals from A Line or NWSL (I would strongly recommend NWSL over A Line).

I would recommend NWSL also. I have purchased from them for over fifteen years. The web site is a little difficult to use but the information is there. I purchased their paper catalogs about eight years ago and it is much easier to find stuff that way. They have some very good info on re-gearing, flywheels, universals, wheel sets and templates of motors.

I am glad you responded. I was going to delete this post, because I discovered that the motor didn’t quit, the decoder did. I will take recommedations into account for future projects.
