Hi,
Has anyone purchased an Athearn Genesis MP-15 switcher? How do you like it? Does it
derail? I have had a lot of problems with the Athearn Genesis SD-70I

Got 2 …neither has derailed yet. ( ??) Since the switcher has 2 axle trucks instead of the 3 axles that are on the SD70, I doubt it will have problems even on questional track.
Havent installed decoders in mine yet , but even on dc on my dcc layout they run quiet and the detail and paint job are excellent.
I bought two Atlas MP-15 DC switchers last year and to be honest, they were not the best locomotives I’ve ever owned. They can handle about 6 cars before the wheels start slipping and they were a booger to get a decoder into.
The only thing I think they have going for them is that they look real good. Since they are small locomotives, the Athearn MP 15 AC will probably pull about as well as Atlas’ version of the MP 15 DC (or about as well as the Athearn SW-1500.)
I solved the slippage problem by consisting the Atlas MP-15 with an Athearn GP-9 which I use as the primary yard switchers. Now there’s a great, strong pulling locomotive! Athearn’s GP-9 that is…chuck
I have one (no DCC, no sound) and it is a great runner. Awesome detail, excellent low speed control.
Have not see it derail yet, it is a very good runner. If it does derail on your layout, try it on someone else’s layout. I would say that the chances are that it is your trackwork and not the locomotive that is at fault. That’s how good this loco is.
As far as pulling power goes, it is light and I don’t expect it to pull a long freight up a grade.
