Athearn N scale Challenger 4-6-6-4

Very powerfull and detailed engine. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to pull long trains. although price is a little high, I think it was well worth it. The engine runs smoothly through the track with no problems and the sound on it is great too.

Ive always been a big BIG BOY Fan, but when I heard this Challenger was coming out I had to own one. Im really pleased at the pulling power of this engine. I bought mine at Less than List Price, but this little wonder is worth any price! And the Sound Is really nice. I cant beleive there is so much in this fine little package. To tell the truth, after I saw it run, I bought another one! Double Header here we come!

This is an incredible model. If Kato doesn’t pay attention, the modelers will.

I like it. When I first saw it, I thought it was an HO model.

I have bought this locomotive I think it’s a very good and accurate model, it run fine, but I have had a problem with its Crank left and right (pieces 73 and 80), they went out from their wheels when the locomotive ran slowly. I think these pieces were bad ensambled in the factory I have serious problems to install them again

This Challenger is currently the pride of my US., N gauge railroad here in the UK. and I have just ordered another from the Athearn second production. I run it on DC only, it pulls very well and the sound is good.

I can describe this loco in three letters: wow! After seeing the capabilities of this loco on DC, I can’t wait to see it operating on DCC later this year. I’m just blown away by the detail, quality and sound.

Great! WOW! Nothing like the old HO train set I had as a kid! Once I get track up I hope to see it pull 20-30 cars. Now I’m back into trains big time! Thanks Athearn!

I am going to make an excuse to use this on my modern-day freelanced RR. Looks like it would be great w/ a SD unit in tandem.

Beautiful model…ran well right out of the box on DC…then STOPPED…had sound but no motion…the dealer very cooperativly tried…no joy…sent back to Athearn …expect new one any day now.

I bought 3985 a month ago and it runs great on my club layout. i had it pulling a 63 car coal drag at passenger speeds on a 1% grade with only using half throttle. The only problem was that the engine stops and start when there are other locomotives in the same block, but besides that it is a great loco.

This locomotive is AWESOME! I got one for Christmas and absolutely love it. My UP layout runs on DC, and the dual mode adapted perfectly; no problems. The sounds are very realistic and the controller is easy to use. The detail is outstanding, but still very sturdy. It has never derailed on my 11 1/4" radius Bachmann EasyTrack, and it relatively easy to put on the rails. Just a wonderful product…

I just found out it has a 3 pole skewed motor instead of the 5 pole skewed motor as advertised by Athearn , and this Model Railroader review .
