Athearn Parts Help

I recently purchased an old BB Athearn 42’ single dome tank car and unfortunately it is missing a few parts. I have tried looking both on eBay and the Athearn website and was unable to locate the needed parts. The parts I am looking for are 15505, which is the gearbox for the brake assembly, and if possible, 2 15506, placard holders. I, however, don’t know if I need the placards given that this car will be dedicated to fuel service. I have the brake wheels already. However if someone happens to have the entire parts envelope, that would work too. I am perfectly welcome to pay for these parts and the cost to ship them to me.

Any help anyone can provide would be very much welcomed.

Athearn stocks parts that are not listed on their web page and it would be best to e-mail or better still give them a call with the needed part numbers.

I honestly forgot about that. [:$] I ordered some replacement trucks for one of my old Roundhouse 34’ passenger cars a few years ago that way. (Thanks again to Whistle Stop Hobbies in Portland, OR for the assist on that. I have mentioned them a few times in other posts.)

I will have to call them in the morning.

FRRYkid,

Go to place for Athearn parts. Have delt with them a few times, great service:

You might be behind the curve on this one. I think I read recently where Horizon has separated themselves from Athearn.

First of all, the correct site for Athearn is now www.athearn.com.

But, I think that it is unclear regarding the current relationship of Athearn to Horizon Hobby.

Horizon Hobby, who owns Athearn, has been acquired by private investor groups.

Rich

Yes they did. The link I used for Horizon Hobby / trains now takes me to the Athearn web site. Horizon is sticking with the RC stuff. Your best just to go to Athearn.com site and call them. I’ve had great success doing that, as they have an excellent CS dept. for tech issues and parts. I just bought the bag of detail parts (etched metal screens, etc.) for a Genisis GP 15, just by calling and asking if I could buy this seperately, so not all parts are listed in their “Parts” section. You have to call and ask.

Mike.

EDIT: Oops! Rich’s post snuck in there while I was typing, so, yes, don’t go to Horizon, go to the site Rich has linked.

My not-so-local hobby shop, Hartmann’s in Intervale NH, carries placards. In envelopes of a dozen. I print out the placards them selves on my inkjet. They add a nice touch of color to a tanker. You said your cars would be in fuel service. Far as I know, that requires a red “Flammable” placard.

As far as your brake part, your best bet may be to find a junker at a train show. Look in the boxes of lower grade stuff parked under the tables.

I don’t know about the whatever, about Horizon Hobbies. Three weeks ago, I got an order from them for 24 Athearn axle gears, for my P2K’s, Along with a New Athearn catalog, so it’s anyones guess, what’s going on.

FRRYKid,

The brake gear housing, does it press into the end platform? If it is PM me with your address and I’ll mail them to you along with the Hazmat holders, FREE No charge to you. Brand new.

Frank

The car itself will have a Flammable warning panel on the car itself. I will also paint the placards red as well. (Wonderful thing detail brushes.)

FRRYKid,

Yes even though it has Flammable on the sides, it must still have the Placards. That’s the law.

Already answered PM.

Take Care!

Frank
