Hi guys I would like to know if I took a Athearn SD9 Dummy and take power parts froma SD40-2 like Gears,Motor Connector Clip and Etc. And put it in a SD9 Dummy.Would anyone of you happen to have a Powered SD9. And take a pic of it inside of what it looks like and also what it looks like with an open Power Trucks so I can see what the gears look like inside the Power Truck. Thanks hope ya guys can help me out here
The gearing on most every Athearn 6 axel unit is the same. However, my main concern with transfering parts from an SD40-2 would be the length difference between the units. I have powered quite a few Athearn dummies myself and I love the standardization between the parts. However, while I have never tried to power an SD9, I would think that the SD40 driveshaft and clips would be too long to fit in the SD9, the motor, trucks and other parts should work fine though.
If I were you I’d try to find a deal on a P2K SD9 instead of powering the less-detailed Athearn unit. I got a P2k SD9 from my LHS for only $40 the other day, and I’ve seen them online for even less. They have much better detail, and have the proper scale hood width.

Hello, Control-Stand and Welcome! [:)][:D]
Metro is correct in that driveshaft length may be an issue.
According to the “American Diesel Locomotive” book by Arthur J. Roberts, the prototype SD9 is 60’-8-1/2" total length. The SD40-2 is 68’-10" total lenth. A significant difference.[:0][:p]
You could get the shafts, but many shops are running low on Athearn parts as I’ve been experiencing this, first hand! If you e-mail Athearn and they have the part in stock, there is a shipping charge (it’s either $5 or $7) which unless “you really want it” might not be worth it.[sigh]
Getting a P2K unit seems like a better option. They’re much cheaper now, online. Good body detail, correct dimensions, quieter running.[:)] [;)][:D][8D]
You can also go to swap meets and pick up used Athearns at decent prices.
Take Care
Ok so all I want to do is take the gears from the SD40-2 to the Dummy Trucks to teh SD9 I was wondering if that would work also the drive shafts.Ill try it out I left a message for Athearn on Friday says ya can order parts from them.So hpefully they’ll get back to me.WISH ME LUCK.Also do ya guys have MSN Messenger if so what is your E-Mail Address so I can add ya to MSN IM,Thats if you ahve it.Thanks for the Replies Guys
