athearn SD40-2 dissasembly

I want to take completly take apart my SD40-2, can any one tell me how to take apart every thing there is to take apart on the athearn sd40-2 except the chell. thanks. sean

Are you certain you want to go taking off shells? I stuffed a loco that way

Ok Sean, prepare for the lesson. First, remove the top contact strip. This is the metal strip on top of the motor that has it’s ends under the contacts on the trucks. Second, locate the worm gear housings. these are located on the trucks where the drive shafts go in. The worm housing is a rounded piece of plastic on top of the truck. Using a straight blade screw driver, pry up on the side of the housing. It should pop free. Carefully remove the worm gaer assembly and set it aside on a clean paper towel. The truck can now be lowered out of the frame. Set it aside. Repeat procedure for the other truck. To remove the motor, grasp the motor between thumb and forefinger and rock it to one side so that it pulls up one of the mounting pads. Lift the motor out. You have just stripped your locomotive to the frame. Next, disassembly of the wheel trucks. On the bottom of the truck is a plastic clip. Carefully slide a straight blade screw driver under the front edge and push gently to the side. It will pop up on one side. Repeat for the other end of the clip. Lift out the wheels and set them aside. On the top of the truck is a smaller clip. Remove it the same way you did the bottom one. Once the clips are off, you can separate the halves of the truck. carefully remove all gears and set aside. Repeat procedure for the other truck. Your SD40 is now disassembled.

sweet, thank you very much, i got it apart, and I am cleaning it. thank you very much, you are the first person ever to answer that question. thank you.

sean.

I’ve got two of those beasts. I had to tear them both down to clean them one time. That’s why I know the step by step by heart. Plus I just recently prepared them for conversion to DCC.

now that I cleaned one truck, I got the truck to roll 3 feet with the push of a finger with out the worm gear in, just the gear box and wheels, compared to one foot previously. so, thats going to make this engine, crawl, and make it more power full because more power gets through the gears because they roll more freely, to the rails.

Sean

Athearns are all just parts anyway. Putting them back together is always fun.

Not as fun as a P2K.

Mere child’s play and rather straight forward.
