Athearn thrust washers: alternative source?

I posted on here last week requesting info on getting spare parts for two athearn heavyweight coach kits i am missing the parts to. So far only thing i have not been able to find is replacements for the thrust washers #99201 which should have come with my two kits i bought last year at CMU train show in mt pleasant michigan. does Walthers have washers same thickness and width as the athearn thrust washers? the thrust washers at athearn are not there and there website says availability TBD. I have looked online for the washers and no shop has any in stock.

If you Google “Athearn thrust washer 99201” you may come up with many hits. Here is a link to one I found that claims to have them in stock: http://chicagolandtoysandhobbies.com/HO-Thrust-Washer-(12)-by-Athearn-(ATH99201)-ATH99201/

Maxman thanks for the info. right now no money to buy those athearn thrust washers from chicagoland toys and hobbys. Do you know if a hardward store chain like ace hardware would have same size of washers as athearn does for the heavyweight passenger car kits to keep trucks connected to the body?

What are the thrust washers for? You may try some KD washers. Any decent hobby shop will have them. About $2 for about 100 washers. I bought a pack about 25 years ago and still have most of them left. They work great for taking up the fore and aft movement of the worm gears on Athearn and others truck towers.

An S.A.E. number 2 washer is the size used on a 2-56 screw. You can get 100 for less than 1/2 the price of the 12 Athearn washers. Athearn buys washers by the thousands and makes a nice profit repacking them. So do Walther’s and other hobby companies.

Back in the mid 80s when I got into HO, I purchased one package of 2-56s from the LHS. Then I stopped into a nut and bolt company and picked up 100 for the same price.

Check ACE, ACO, Fastenal, idiotbay or local bolt companies.

Here is an online example:

Sorry, when you said “thrust washer”, I thought that you meant the thrust washers that Athearn uses in the motor worm assemblies to keep the worm shaft from moving back and forth. I did see that you originally started out asking for parts for a passenger car, but when you said thrust washer I thought you had moved onto another project.

Anyway, I looked at one of the Athearn car diagrams on the HOSeeker website (http://www.hoseeker.org/athearninstructionscars1970/athearnHvyWtRndRfCoach1975.jpg) and they show that 99201 washer as being 3/32 inch internal diameter. The screws are 2-56, so you are looking for a washer that fits a 2-56 screw. If you go to your local non-big box hardware store you should find an aisle which has multiple boxes of different screws, nuts and washers. 2-56 should be a common size.

The only problem you might have relates to the outside diameter of the washers. The diagram shows that the washer has to go through a hole in the weight, at least in the car shown on the diagram. Your actual car may be different. I purchased some 2-56 washers one time that were just the right outside diameter to fit in a truck bolster hole, and I could use them as a centering washer for a 2-56 truck screw. I figured that I could use the hardware store variety as a cheaper alternative to the ones

The part #99201 is used for both his car and the worm thrust washer. I believe it is also used with the Proto 2000 locomotives.
