Athearn Turbine smoke and sound

To me, at least 50% of the fun of owning a Turbine would be the sound and smoke, however the RTR Athearn model does not come with either. I’ve seen a very cool video of a (I believe) O ga. Turbine with sound and smoke. Question, how hard would if be to add sound and smoke to the Athearn Turbine? Im running DC only.

Ulrich Models will be selling Athearn Turbines with QSI turbine sound in them. Here is the URL:

They do not have a smoke system…

According to the Athearn rep at the Big-E the models will be all set to accept sound systems-mounting points. They didn’t want to delay arrival by waiting on sound to be able to intro both. Hope they weren’t waiting for MRC to produce a board for them.

Perhaps they had to clear sound system past their legal dept(hearing damage liability). [:-^]

Turbines didn’t pruduce "smoke’. It was a extreamly violent blow of exhaust. ALL Turbines produced it. Some was greater (Big Blows) then others. So puffing smoke coming out of a Turbine exhaust would look just wrong and stupid. Sound would be great, but anything other then that would not cut it.

If a turbine is producing smoke, there’s something radically wrong - like missing or damaged compressor blades. You really don’t want to keep running it, because it’s probably on the verge of catastrophic disintegration.

As for sound, just mosey down to your neighborhood airport and record a few jet takeoffs…

(Not military jets, though. The UP didn’t use afterburners.)

Steam turbines produced smoke. The GTELs didn’t. Be specific! [swg]

O gauge baby-turbines usually have smoke units, but produce a constant stream of smoke, there is no puffing to it. It’s there to represent the exhaust. Most O gauge diesels have smoke units too, and they don’t smoke all that much either. A very light plume or a haze like you’d see from your car’s exhaust pipe is all that comes out, unless it’s under a really heavy load, then they can smoke a bit.

The GTELs didn’t smoke, but to see the models smoke looks pretty slick if you ask me.
