Athearn vs Kato with Bethgon Coalporters

I recently bought a 5-pack of the Athearn and a 8-pack of the Kato Bethgon Coalpoarters. I surprised to see the differance in the finish of the aluminum of each. The Athearn was a glossy reflective aluminum finish while the Kato was more of a brushed aluminmum finish. Is there anyway to make the Atheran look like the Kato? The pictures of the Athearn didn’t match the product in my opinion…

Thanks

Is the Athearn finish paint or the moulded plastic?
Either way Testors Dullcoat has to be your first port of call… as always try a discreet corner first…
If the model is not painted I have found that painting the inside of such cars helps to solve the problem of light coming through pale coloured bodies (it reduces or stops the translucence which can be the significant problem). You might try even a very light grey for the interior (vertical brush strokes are okay…scratching on the alluminium left by the coal load).
Hope this helps.
How do the cars compare otherwise?
How do they compare to the LBL/EC shops Coalporters?
Please let us know how you get on.

I would mostly have to say that you should use Athearn coalporters. I had KAto cars on a N scale layout and they always would derail of the track. Athearn should give you the best of luck.
