Athearn vs Proto 2000 parts interchangable

Does anyone know if the Athearn 6 wheel drive trucks are interchangable with P2K 6 wheel trucks? Or more specifically, are any of the internal drive components interchangable? I know the gear/axle/bearings on the 4 wheel trucks are as I have replace most of my P2K gears with Athearns. I have a ‘broken’ P2K E8 with missing drive shaft parts and Walthers no longer has replacement parts for it. I don’t have any Athearn 6 wheel diesels to compare with. I looked at NWSL website and can’t find anything that would replace the P2K part.

Bob,

Did you try contacting NWSL directly about it? I’ve found them extremely helpful with inquiries. If they don’t have a suitable replacement, they may be able to suggest something for you.

What part of the drive shaft is broken? If in the center try Rubber tubing.

All the Athearn BB and RTR wheel gears are identical, 4 and 6 axle. Genesis are different. The drive shaft parts can be interchanged with Athearn as well. The A Line drive shaft package with also work.

The various universal bits at NWSL usually aren’t cutsom fit - you have to do the fitting. You can get the sets that have the couplings plus a length of drive shaft you cna cut to length, or just the coupling bits and use a proper diameter rod, cut to length. Or if all else fails, go to the airplane section of the hobby shop and get some fuel hose, that’s what I ended up doing for one side of my bras RS-3, the long hood end had some Athearn components and it worked great, the short end was hacked in a way that the truck could turn but there was no way it could rock fore and aft, so it was binding everywhere. I removed the universals, which look like some of the NWSL bits, and put in a piece of fuel line tubing, works great now. If I get around to it I may order some repalcement NWSL parts and just put it together properly, I’d prefer a solid drive line, but the tubing actually works quite nicely.

Check your PM’s.

I think we’ve got this taken care of.

Original poster tells me the parts I sent worked and his loco runs fine now.

Problem solved.

Jeffrey is correct, his parts fit my P2K and it works great, again. Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions and especially to Running Bear (Jeffrey) for his parts.
