Due to the high failure rate with MRC sound decoders,Athearn has turned to Tsunami to equip their newer releases of Challengers and Big Boys in N scale.Fine I think but it has me wondering. Are the tenders the same meaning that a Tsunami retrofit is a simple drop-in available from Athearn or is it entirely different setup.I have one Tsunami retrofit (TSU750/Challenger) on the way but it’s no easy job,so a drop-in kit might be an interesting option.I still have a Big Boy and another Challenger that are likely to fail me…some time.
According to an ad in the June Model Railroader, and according to their blog, Soundtraxx will be offering the TSU-4664N as a drop-in replacement for the MRC decoder in Athearn Challengers and Big Boys.
Thanks, this is great info.I can be patient, just hope they’ll be affordable.
Yes I also saw the ad, but not sure when it would be avialable, I just however bought a brand new Tsunami equipped Athearn Challenger and the sound of it is top notch. So I am sure the decoder should be available.
