I just gor 2 athern blue box engines, One says sd-40 (blue and white Great Northern) and the other says sd-45 (grey and red outhern Pacific). i have not tested them yet. Are the frame/motors the same as in the athern blue box PA-1’s does anyone know?
I did not know that Athearn made a Blue Box SD40. They made a ready to run.

The PA’s chassis and trucks should be longer, as is an SD40-2, but the rest of the parts should all work.

The photo above, is the 1973 version with flywheels…they also had a 1966 version without flywheels and same motor. Here is a pic’ of it…the blue shell, is the engine. Even has the older hand rails, with the holes in the top rail, rather than the tabs that fold over. The drive line is missing, with worms…gave that to My friend in the UK.

A couple more pic’s of a Athearn BB SD40-2, circa 70’s, trucks/chassis are longer, newer gear housing’s…this and the other 5 I have, are all original, including the incandesant bulb…which still works, never had to replace it…more than likely, cause I don’t run them at warp speed…great puller’s and they don’t growl as much as they did when new. LOL

Nice engines, I sent you a email with pictures. I paid $5.00 for both, so I could not go wrong and i can easily get my money back out of it and then maybe a little more.
You got a great deal getting two SD40s for $5. I use the Athearn SD40-2 frames to power my Bowser E7 metal bodies. That frame has super pulling power with the added weight of the metal body. A pair of the Bowser/Athearn SD40s (E7 A&B) will pull the paint off the walls.

Gotcha covered…I havn’t seen that paint scheme, in a very long time…for sure You can’t beat that price anywhere…FREE is better, which I do have some needing a home…even BB dummy’s…waiting for My friend in the UK, to make up His mind. The only suck part is…it costs a lot to ship to the UK now. Those two BN engines in the pic’s are dummy’s…needing a home…

Shipping has gotten expensive compared to a few years ago Frank. I hope your able to get the engines to him.
I have 2 SD40T-2 BB engines, with flywheels. One was converted to DCC and still runs. The other took too many trips to the floor.
Your engines are an SD45 and a SDP40. The trucks and frame from the PA are totally different. The rest of the drive components are pretty much universal.
