Atlas 2001 Releases

Looking for some info from an Atlas O catalog that covered the 2001 releases. I currently have a B&O SD35, #7406. I came across the second road number, #7411, that was issued at the same time and considering it for purchase. The info I want to verify is the color of the side frames, on my #7406 they are black but the photo of the #7411 has silver truck frames. Unfortunately the Atlas site, under new product listing, only shows the #7406 but not the #7411.

Thanks for any input.

Can’t help you with your Atlas inquirey, but in case you were wondering, the B & O did paint the trucks silver on some of their SD-35’s.

Just seemed kinda odd that they would release two roadnumbers, at the same time, with one black and the other with silver. Seems like the silver mite have been used primarily for passenger service but it’s not identified as a SDP. My primary concern was/is that somebody may have messed with it and possibly screwed it up. Ain’t gonna sweat the small stuff, since I come nowhere near being a rivetcounter. [%-)]

Nope, not a passenger engine. The SD-35’s were pressed into duty on the famous WEST END, and I think they tried the silver trucks to more readily identify wear-and-tear on the running gear.

These two worked well together

so I guess black & silver trucks can work together. [swg]

True enough, the B&O SD35s were “hill engines” on both the West End (think Seventeen Mile Grade) and on the Pittsburgh Line (Sand Patch) and used as helpers until the SD50s of 1984-86 arrived.

The silver trucks were an experement to find cracking of the sideframes easier. It was also done on a Chessie GP-40.

It didn’t last long.

I like Atlas O, but I can’t help you with the Inquiry, I barely have a layout running!!! [#offtopic]
