Hey everyone, my birthday coming up on monday thinking of telling my wife i would like to have the new Atlas B23-7 in the Southern roadname my LHS has some. Question is does anyone have own one yet are they good runners? Just thought i would ask it’s Atlas so guess it can’t be too bad. Wife probably wont get it for me anyhow. Might have to by my own BD present Thanks in advance.

Atlas engines in general are excellent runners.

I’ve got two Gold units in boxes. Just came in this week. I hope to get them out and run them this weekend. If they are anything like the 8-40CWs that Atlas released earlier this year, they will run great. The only knock I have on the sound units are how sensitive they are to track imperfections. They will find things that non-sound units will ignore. This isn’t limited to Atlas units.

you dont even need to question Atlas i have a UP 8-40B ATSF 8-40BW and Atlas S-2 and they all run perfect and silent no problems at all. go for it

Are you in n scale or HO? I have one in n-scale. The engine runs great, but the couplers need to be replaced as they do not operate very well with my uncoupling magnets. I have also determined that it is too big an engine for my coffee table layout. So if you are looking for n scale I would be willing to part with it.

Thanks everyone i didn’t think i could go wrong with atlas and i am ho scale. I will see what happens on my birthday.

Bruce,
I like the idea of you buying your own B23-7. This is a good husbands perspective on model railroading subject. This way you won’t be dissapointed. Good call.

I had a chance to run my two B23-7s today. Here’s a couple of pictures with #5s but front/back handrails not yet installed:

They run great. Very quiet, very smooth (with sound turned off) and they track extremely well. I tested them with a Digitrax Super Chief. Programming was a snap. The paint, lettering and detailing are very good. Not quite as good as Broadway Limited’s but still very good. The sound is excellent. On par with the 8-40CWs. They make an excellent addition to my fleet.
