Atlas C40-8CW Sound seems wrong !!!

I recently purchased an Atlas C40-8CW with sound and I expected it to sound similar to an AC 4400 as they are both G.E. locos but it sounds more like an EMD loco with a definate whine rather than the chug chug of a G.E. Or am I wrong ??? Remember I live in the U.K. so I can’t easily go and listen to one. Or have Atlas cocked it up and put in the wrong Sound decoder??

Any thoughts would be appreciated and thanks in advance, CPPedler

Sound decoders are all the same, it the chip that make the difference.

You absolute worse case scenario is that you get a new chip from QSI Solutions. E-mail Atlas first.

You could compare it to a Class 59 or Class 66 to see if it’s more like an EMD.

Perhaps I should refrase the question. Has anyone else bought an Atlas Dash 8-40CW and are you happy with the sound that it produces. The one that I have whines like an EMD and I would have expected it to Chug Chug like a GE similar to an AC 4400 . Or is that not what they sound like??? CPPedler

I’ve got two of the ATSF C40-8W’s and have no problems withe the sound.

Dash 8s were the origonal GE “Chuggers”. Other GE’s may do it, but the chug is more pronounced in the Dash 8. At full throttle they sound like steamers! The sound Atlas has in there’s does sound more like an EMD, but suposedly it’s a GE FDL engine, so you’ll just have to put up with it, I guess.

Small speakers have very litlle to offer in bass response. Perhaps you are hearing more of the turbo whine instead? How is your hearing over the various frequencies? These all have a bearing on what any indivdual hears. I have an F unit with an old 567 engine that to me sounds like crackling cellophane…go figure? jc5729
