Atlas Genset Pics

Hello All

Today I Picked up an Atlas Genset and added a digitrax 6 function decoder to it.

Here’s a few pics

This is what it looks like out of the box. I had already removed the couplers before this pic. Note the front and rear railings are factory installed:

I was expecting the loco to be a similar size as the MP15 but was quite surprised that it is a bit larger than a GP40-2. Here they are side by side

Here’s a pic of the circuit board with a digitrax DH165IP decoder installed. Fits like a glove

Note: the location of the 2 large capacitors noted in other posts is just to to right of the circuit board under the metal box.

This model has both Front and Rear Ditch lights. They are wired to come on with the head light and rear light. if you want to have them operate independently you will have to re-wire. I will be doing a re-wire witht the installed decoder on a later date. Note that the ditch lights are not isolated and share a single pair of wires. There are dropping resistors on the board but the way it’s wired suggests that 2 additional resistors would be needed. The posistive and negative feed the ends with 2 resistors between them.

Quick pic of Genset pulling coal through town.

That looks great! You did a nice job on the install. Thanks for sharing pics.

Now, I just need to find me one. They’re selling like hotcakes.

Yeeeesssss thay are finally in the stores picking mine up Saturday I got the one in the Pacific Harbor Line paint scheme, nice photos and info on the decoder install. [8D]

I am looking for an excuse to get one of these. I see where SEPTA (Southeast Penna Transportation Authority) has one of these. If ATLAS does this one I will get it.

I wish they would have done a Canadian Pacific version. I’m still going to get one and repaint it.

Does the Canadian Pacific own any Gensets? Looking at the notes in this link most if not all were sold to other railroads:

There was a video posted of 2100 or 2101 switching. A shame the person taking the video had to stand on the other side of a highway as you can’t clearly hear the sounds the Genset is making. Those seem to be the only two like the Atlas model that they ever owned, and seem to still have them. The others that all changed hands are various versions of like the hybrids with a ton of batteries and a single small diesel.

I see one in Oshawa Ontario all the time switching the GM plant. It’s been around off and on for over a year.

Here is a pic of one of them, I’m not sure how many they own or lease.

Google is our friend[:-^]

Here’s a video or 2100 and 2101 together:

Why on the Union Pacific Gensets do they call it “UPY” ???

UPY is another reporting mark that Union Pacific started using. I think they use it for their switchers now since they were running out of road numbers for their locomotive fleet.

Aha, very interesting. Thanks John!

Wow, those things are much bigger than I thought when placed next to the GP40.

Here is a good vid of them in action on You Tube.

I got really close to the one in Oshawa and I too was surprised just how big they are.

This video, you can actually hear what the Gensets sound like. Some vendor posted in the Yahoo Digitrax group offering the Atlas model with QSI sound installed - QSI does not yet have a Genset sound for their decoders, and the link on this vendors apge proves it - not sure which sounds they used, but it had a farily large amount of turbo whine in it, mostly overpowring the other sounds. Clearly not the Genset. Gonne be interesting to see how the sound vendors handle this one, since the way the 3 different motor/generator sets start up is completely unlike any ‘regular’ diesel. And it won;t do to just have the sound of one engine at low throttle, 2 at mid range, adn all 3 at high settings, although I have a feeling that’s how it will be initially handled.

Man what a good looking engine ended up not only getting the PHL but also went out today and picked up a BNSF, what a great job by Atlas it was well worth the wait.
