Where is there room in these narrow body engines to install a speaker for DCC sound? I calculate that only a 1/2 speaker will fit directly above the DCC PC board. Is this location standard or optimum for speaker placement? I absolutely refuse to attempt to dremel any kind of hole to mount the speaker within the weights. I’ve also looked for possible mounting inside the fuel tank, but alas there is no room there for either. I thought Atlas included sound with some of these locomotives and am wondering where they mounted their speakers.
Will the speaker sound OK if mounted directly above the PC board?
I have an Atlas Silver Series Sd24. In mine, they have an A frame over the rear truck with weights attached. I removed one of the weights, and installed a 28mmX3mm speaker. The size of the hole is 30mm, but it’s impossible to find a 30mm speaker with the 3mm depth.
Do you think having a loco with sound is worth the extra cost? Or would you rather prefer a sound system with large speakers located underneath the layout? I’m trying to decide whether or not DCC sound is worth the added trouble to install in my loco’s.
This has been brought up a few times. Basically sound equipped locos are more realistic but depending what you do can be more expensive. If all you want is train noise in the background then a layout sound system is all you need. But if you want to use the sound to enhance the realism of your operations then a big layout sound system wont work very well.
