Can anyone suggest the proper and easiest way to change the brushes on the Atlas/Kato motors.

If you can get the replacement brushes, the brass “buttons” on the plastic commutator cover snap out of the cover. You can use needlepoint tweezers or two extremely flat blade screwdrivers to get under them and pop them out. Take care to not loose the springs. [:)]
Just reverse the procedure for replacement. Take care to keep the brush straight as you push in the brass button or the brush may snap in two.
