I am in need of 37 assorted locomotives and cars for an art project. I want them to look quite nice and detailed. I have purchased and Atlas-O Locomotive and its great. I’m wondering if I really have to spend that much. What other brands might I want to consider? Thank you very much for your input.
Save yourself a bundle and track down a local model railroad club. Maybe they’ll let you set up for some photos or whatever you need that many locos and cars for instead of buying something you apparently will have no need of afterward.
If it is necessary to purchase what you need, is there a reason you aren’t buying HO scale…it’s a heckuva lot cheaper than O gauge stuff.
If you must have O gauge, try Weaver or Williams…they’re cheaper than Atlas but not quite as detailed.
Are you buying these as static or running models? Keep in mind many of the O scale companies (including) Atlas make unpowered versions of their locomotives which are considerably cheaper especially on ebay on other online outlets. As far as other companies that make O scale products, are you buying 3-rail or 2-rail equipment (this makes a big difference). Several of the other companies like MTH, Lionel, Weaver and Williams all make good stuff, but the details are hit and miss when compared with Atlas which are usually of very high quality.
Good luck with your project!
