I picked up an atlas s-1 used. I think it is a newer one, made in china. It will require repainting. How do you remove the hood? The atlas site has an exploded view, showing seperate hood, cab and walkway/frame. There is no explaination on taking it apart. Any help is appreciated.
1). Remove the small handrail/grabirons that connect the rear of the cab to the frame, and make sure handrails on the front are disconnected from the cab, as well.
2). Hold the loco in your hand, then with your other hand grab the cab down low on one side. Put your index finger on the front, then put your thumb on the rear (as low as you can on the cab), then pull outward and upward at the same time. The cab shell should pop free of it’s catch on one side.
3). Repeat Step 2 for the other side of the cab.
4). After the cab is released from it’s two catches, lift the cab straight up.
5). Now lift the hood off the frame from the rear end at a slight angle. The catch under the nose should release, and now the whole hood should lift off.
Reverse the above steps for reassembly.
Personally, I have lost count of how many times I’ve done this. I own three Atlas switchers, and have installed decoders in several others at my RR club.
