ATLAS S-2 H.O SCALE SWITCHER,MADE IN AUSTRIA,WHEEL WEAR

I BOUGHT THIS LOCO LATE LAST YEAR ON EBAY. IS IN GOOD CONDITION, EXCEPT IT HAS SOME WHEEL WEAR, WHICH DIDN’T SURPRISE ME GIVEN ITS AGE.

ANYWAY, THE WHEELS SEEM TO GET A BIT DIRTY RATHER QUICKLY(my tracks are cleaned regularily) AND THEN THE LOCO’S SPEED IS VARIABLE, UNTIL I CLEAN THE WHEELS AGAIN. RUNS WELL WITH CLEAN WHEELS !!

SO, MY REQUEST FOR ADVICE IS: IS THIS COMMON FOR WHEEL WEAR, OR SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR OTHER ISSUES?

ADVICE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

WOMBAT,

AUSTRALIA.

Maybe I am on the wrong forum…I am brand new here and maybe I have made an error ?

New wheels from Northwest Shortline, here in the US. Usually “NWSL”; will go a long ways to solving your issue. If the wheel tread is not smooth it will do a great job of getting gunked up, as you have experienced. No way around it but the replace, AFAIK

Thanks for that. I shall now try to make the wheels more smooth with my track cleaning block, instead of just using the wire brush cleaner. If that doesn’t help, I’ll investigate the new wheels with my model railway hobby shop.

Wombat,

A link to Northwest Shortline…

You may be able to obtain new wheelsets from Atlas. This is their parts page: http://www.atlasrr.com/hoparts.htm. Send them and email for availability and cost. Welcome to the forums. By the way, as a new member your posts will be moderated for a short while so there will be a lag between your posting and its appearance.

It takes about 10 posts before the moderators decide you aren’t going to send us a link for Ruskie brides. Lose the CAPS LOCK key, it is considered shouting in all Internet forums.

Welcome aboard, I got nothing to add, you’ve gotten good answers.

Welcome to the forum [#welcome]. Dont have any comments about your post but I do want to invite you into the Jeffreys Trackside Diner. We talk on and off topic there. Come on over and I will treat to a cup of joe ( coffee )

Thanks for the invite…but is that a physical place, or a website ? I live in Melbourne Australia…so a coffee over there would prove to be rather expensive, eh? ha ha.

Whoops, caps lock off !! Message received …thanks for the tip. No worries.

Thank you Joe.

Thank you, Frank, and appreciate the welcome, as a new person.
