What is Atlas trainline are they beginner type engines or do they have better quality than that?
The idea was to get more into the entry level stuff - without decending into Tyco/Model Power land that is.
This will hopefully answer a lot of questions:

From looking at the press release, I imagine the quality of the models will be similar to the Atlas “Classic” Series which is their GP7s. I have to say though, the covered hopper looks pretty nice.
Thanks for posting this. Somebody take a look at that caboose. Wow! The C&O/Pere Marquette caboose by Magor. And for only $13. Gads, I need a fleet of them. We really are living in a golden age of model railroading.
Cheers

I cant wait for the covered hoppers[:D][:)]!!!
Pete,I reckon you and I will be buying the first release of those C&O hacks…I need at least 10 as it now stands…
I model Nscale but always thought that HO prices were roughly equivalent to Nscale. Those prices didn’t look so inexpensive to me. In fact, those prices don’t appear to be much different from current prices in Nscale rolling stock. Yes, I know that these are HO scale models. Am I living in the past with price expectations?
Yes.
These prices are in the same range as Athearn RTR products.
The better quality Atlas cars (or Kadee, or Genesis, or Intermountain, or Red Caboose) are $23 and up !!!
George,I wonder if the street discount prices will be the same?
Did you happen to catch that the shell of the GP38-2 will have dimples for the grabs? Perhaps I am not reading it right but,it appears the GP38-2 will not have molded on grabs just like the Athearn GP38-2.At any rate we shall see.
Hmmmm - none of Athearn GP38-2’s I own have moulded on grabs - just the dimples where they should go. Mind you most of the Gp38-2s I have were made about 8 -10 years ago at least.
Did Athearn change their shells???
Tim
No Tim,Sadly the RTR Athearn GP38-2S still does not have grabs just the dimples…[:(] Just the new drive shafts… [:D] The RTR GP38-2 does run smoother then the older BB GP38-2s without needing the drive tweaked like the BBs…
GP38-2’s! Hope they make Boston and maine (pre Guilford)
I’am I wrong or are these new trainman engines in “O” scale only?
JIM
OH DH!!!1 dumb question old age ia getting me[B)][:I]

Youch! Twenty three skins and up for a car! It appears that maybe HO is more expensive than Nscale. That means that the Trainman rolling stock is about 57% the price of standard Atlas rolling stock. I sure hope that the Nscale offerings will cost about 57% of the standard Atlas rolling stock. That would put an Nscale car or caboose between $7.50 to $14.25. I remember buying them for five bucks! In Nscale, engines have not become much more expensive but the cars have gone way way up. I just put up for sale an old Motobecane bicycle. I became reaquainted with bicycles. All of this time, I have been walking around with a late 1970s to early 1980s mind set concerning the world of bicycles. As I grow older, I better understand why my uncle stubbornly hangs on to older technology and ways of doing things. When I was in college, I used to wonder why he didn’t modernize his furnace, tools etc. He had the money. Now I am becoming the same way. I obstinantly feel that if it was good enough for me back in the day, well it still works and is still good enough to get the job done! These young punks don’t know squat. Of course, back in the day I was the same way. I too was the young punk who didn’t know that he didn’t know anything! I was shocked to learn that Gravely no longer made its famous little tractor that had attachments to do several jobs. My VCR died recently and I am concerned that I won’t be able to find a new one. Yes I do have a DVD player. Two other surprises were the difficulty finding a stereo receiver with a tape loop or trying to find a new CD player that only took one disc. Try finding a new receiver that has a phono input. I have now switched to surround sound, but 5.1 channels seems almost too many. I am so backwards that I am more than happy with cable TV, except for the price.
But are they DCC-ready? If not, they’re a definite step below the Atlas Classic!
I would have to say they will be of same quality, minus the dcc, which by the way I have nothing but problems with the DCC they put in thier loco’s. I will no longer buy a Atlas unit with a decoder in it. I will try one of these and also will stick to the Silver Series.
They are the same drive as the Atlas Master series locomotives, which is DCC-ready.
I figure the caboose is a bargain at 13 bucks. It’s new tooling, and looks like they have the paint job right. The typical Walthers caboose costs about $25 list now. Yes if you model the Santa Fe or the SP you can get an old Athearn Blue Box for 5 or 6 dollars, but cabooses are so distinctive that they make the end of the train look real when they’re right. Before now it has been all Brass imports for the Magor car caboose, and I wasn’t hip to cabooses back in the day when they were “cheap”.
So hooray for Atlas, and yes, $13 is now inexpensive for a freight car. A new one, at least.

Peter
