Atlas Trains - HO steam locos

Does Atlas trains make any HO steam trains? I’m looking online and I’m only seeing diesels.

Are Atlas HO trains generally DCC ready?

[#welcome]

I think Atlas only does diesels. LION bought his before the invention of DCC, but I think ewe can get them either way.

Atlas currently makes only diesel locomotives. You can get them as DC only, DCC ready, and DCC/Sound equipped.

I believe they may have made steam locomotives in the far distant past.

Go to their web site and you can see what all they have available.

Athearn, Broadway Limited Imports, Bachmann sell DC, DCC ready, DCC non sound on board and DCC sound on board.

Google all of them for more info.

There are a few other companies that also sell steamers.

They have an 0-6-0 and 4-4-2 in O scale, for HO, I just have never seen steam from them.

Atlas makes steam in N-scale, but not HO.

Paul,The only steam engine Atlas makes in N is a 2 truck Shay…Kato and Bachmann makes N Scale steam…

I have always found that curious that Atlas does not manufacture steam engines, at least not in HO scale.

Most other manufacturers produce both steam and diesel.

Are there others who don’t manufacture steam engines? I cannot readily name any.

Rich

Bowser comes to mind since they dropped their steam engine kits and Kato does not make HO steam.

The 4-4-2 is their Industrial Rail (O27) line.

The 0-6-0 while still shown in their catalog pages online has not been available for a while (although the odd dealer might still have one). Don’t know if they are planning a rerun or not.

Enjoy

For a couple of years Atlas didn’t make any engines because they thought nobody would pay $25.00+ for an HO engine. That was probably about 1980.

Brakie,
Don’t forget Atlas’ 2-6-0’s in N-scale:

Way back in the day, when stuff was made in the USA, Atlas only made track, their line of entry level electrical controls and plastic structure kits.

Their next move as I recall was to start importing N scale stuff, track, trains, locos - steam and diesel.

Then in the 80’s they got into the imported diesel business in HO, and much later rolling stock as well.

They also got into the two rail O scale thing which expanded on its own - but still never got “big” into steam in that scale/gauge.

They have never offered an HO steam loco - I don’t expect they ever will.

I could never understand that logic seeing Athearn locomotives was around $20.00 and there was only $5.00 difference… Of course in 1980 it was hard to draw customers away from Athearn and oddly enough a toy train set manufacturer would do that few years later by introducing their Proto 2000 line.

Life Like set a new detail standard for diesel locomotives.

Not odd at all, Life Like hired a very knowledgeable modeler with industry experiance to develope the Proto line - and Bachmann did the same thing to develope the Spectrum line.

In both cases these individuals were given enough control to get those high quality products to market.

The rest is history…

And before that Atlas importanted the Atlas/Roco line of diesels in the 70s and Athearn made freight cars for Atlas…

$20 TO $25 was a 25% increase in price and was the highest at that time. Kind of like a $300 engine going to $375. There were and are limits.

After Athearn backed out of the RTR market in the early 60’s, they made RTR versions of their stuff for a number of other brands, Atlas, Cox, Lionel and a few others.

Yup…Plum forgot about that 2-6-0.
