Atlas U30C's (DCC/DC comparison)

I recently purchased a pair of Atlas U30C’s at a good discount from the LHS that’s currently going out of business. [:(]

Anyway, these have the 4-function DCC decoder in them, but I use straight DC. There’s a little slide switch to go between power modes, but they seem a bit “jumpy” in straight DC. No slow speed at all. Anyone else had this happen with a dual-mode decoder?

(For what it’s worth, I may just pull the things out and hardwire them, but I don’t want to lose the beautiful headlights)

Sounds like a power pack issue, not a locomotive issue…

No…

I have no other troubles with other locomotives. Only these two out of nearly a hundred locomotives have both this problem and dual-mode decoders. Wouldn’t you draw an almost immediate connection?

Not neccessarily. It could be the amp rating of the dual mode decoders and you power pack. You need to understand that voltage isn’t what powers your locos. Its the current that is provided by your power pack/power supply.
