Atloona/ Johnstown

Hi

Im heading up the atloona area, my family lives in johnstown PA, and i was wondering where the 4 track mainline in atoona goes down to a double track mainline

I rode that area last year and have rail-fanned it in spots. If I remember correctly the main is 3 tracks from Johnstown to just past Horseshoe Curve then drops to 2 tracks through Altoona.

hmm, sounds right, but im going to there on firday so i’ll find out

…Johnstown area: 3 tracks.

PS: Looking at my avatar…if I would turn my head a bit to the right…{and look down about 6 or 700’, I would be looking at the old Pennsy main which used to be 4 tracks but has been reduced to 3.

The Johnstown “Pennsylvania Station” is within my view out that window.

Sounds like I might sit outside your window. Twice a month I come to Johnstown to run ops sessions. I arrive early, grab a sub, and eat it under the old stone bridge.

…Chip:

I’m setting at the Johnstown side of the Incline Plane restaurant window.

Look down at the guy with the beard and camera around his neck waving. That’s me.

…I might comment, the photo Chip presented of the stone / concrete arch bridge, is the one and the same that much of the debris from the famous 1889 Johnstown flood collected at and caused serious trouble by helping to create a stop for the flood water making it worse and then the debris caught fire…{Sounds unusual, fire in a flood}, but that happened. 2,000 plus people died.

Bridge is, and has been in use all these years and currently still carrying the {now NS east / west main}…Formally the 4 track Pennsy.

It is two tracks, for the most part, east of Altoona to Harrisburg. Westbound, it’s three tracks through Conemaugh to Conpit Jct (if memory serves…)
