ATSF Mobil fuel so Mookie can see...

http://www.shorpy.com/node?page=36

top photo page 36 shows how they use all those ATSF and now BNSF diesel tank cars.

What a GREAT photograph.

Interesting. Note the signs of fuel spillage on the platform next to the power.

And the heavy weights on the other tracks. Cars for troops? Add on eqiuipment for other trains?

Noticed that picture when I “visited” that web site earlier, really good pic.

For the “Mookster”, it should have been C B & Q, instead of ATSF.

I will spend the rest of the day off and on looking through this website! I finally got to Ed’s picture, after I got hung up on a picture of the old Capital Hotel here in LIncoln. I remember the hotel, now just trying to remember exactly where it was!

Found the Super Chief on 38 getting a drink.

And Houston Ed’s house on 35! Boy something for just about everyone and especially the seasoned citizens on the forum!

Mutt I am learning to like the “others” but CBQ will always be my favorite - that and the UP Big Boy!

Thanx Ed!

PS - do they still do this (filling directly from tank cars)?

No but engines will sit down right on the main and drink directly from local tank trucks that bring fuel directly to the side of the track.

I recall an article that stated the BN (Green and Black days) drank from one big tank car between desiels in a lash up for huge range. However I understand the forces between the engines were destructive to the delicate tank car.

I saw a picture of a brass model of UP power fed by a huge Propane type tanker which I dont think made it past the experiemental state.
