ATSF passenger cars - what to get?

I still need some passenger cars to put behind my Cary E6A, so I did some searching to see what was out there. I see Super Chief Pullman style cars and streamlined Budd cars from Walthers, and I’m kind of leaning towards the Budd cars since they’re about $40 cheaper per car. What I don’t know is what would be appropriate for the E6A? It’s somewhat hard to find simple info on the subject. Roster websites are all like “These cars were with this engine from 11 to 12 on a Monday in this city, with numbers THX-1138 divided by the square root of pi on the hexadecimal value of the third weekend of 1956 minus 24x times 84 multiplexers where q is equal to 4y minus x and i comes before e except after c”. After the surgeon repaired my brain, I thought I’d come here and see if I could get a simpler answer?[:)]

Pity there’s not a side view in this popular Jack Delano photo but by the looks of the roof I see a Budd combine or baggage/dorm, next five look like Pullman, then another Budd and perhaps a heavyweight diner? The rest is anybody’s guess.

Great photo! Check out the yoke style bell on the lead unit! Notice, too, the blue flag sticking straight out from the pilot (and a red circular disk as well?)

My copy of Dubin’s Some Classic Trains shows a mix of Budd and Pullman equipment on the De-Luxe. The Super Chief was originally all Budd from 5/18/1937, Then Santa Fe ordered enough equipment for a second complete set furnished primarily by Pullman and placed in service on 2/22/1938, but I would have to surmise that events after 12/7/1941 changed all that… during WWII railroads had to press anything and everything into service and complete streamlined consists were compromised.

Hope that helps, Ed

Darth Santa Fe … I don’t know why I can’t post in your thread. There is no REPLY box.

Santa Fe intermixed passenger cars from various car manufacturers in the same trains.

I do have a book entitled “25 Years of Sanat Fe Passenger Train Consists” (or some similar title).

Do you have a particluar Santa Fe train in mind? … I think the E6’s were used mostly on regional Sanat Fe trains rather than the transontinental trains.

Walthers has consist info in their “Name Trains” section.

Make sure the cars you buy will run on the curves you have on your layout.

Your best bet is to contact the Santa Fe Historical & Modeling Society.

That group is a wealth of information on such issues.

Incidentally, there weren’t many E6 locos owned and operated by the ATSF, four E6A units to be exact.

I think that they all were assigned to the Texas Chief consists.

Thanks for the info everyone! I’m not modeling a specific train; I just want the cars to go together with the engine.[:)] It looks like a lot of Budd cars were used here and there, and reading about the Texas Chief, they used a lot of different cars from all over. With that, I think I’ll go with Budd cars.

I know the detail on the Pullman cars is amazing and all, but MSRP $80 seems expensive for a plastic passenger car (without lighting!). You could practically get an older brass car for that! Good thing I almost never pay the list price for anything.[:D]

Darth, that is a good decision. Go for it

First a few words about the E6s. As someone has already mentioned there were only 4 E6As on the Santa Fe. That was because of the new equipment types coming out so rapidly from both Alco and EMD. Can anyone say PA?

Anyway, the 11 series of locomotives (the E6s) were only in regular transconenental service for five years. There they mostly pulled the #17/18, and #21/22. In that most famous picture of the Madame Queen tugging the Super Chief over Raton, that is E6 #13 behind it. After that (about 1946) they stayed to the east of La Junta. Often running on the Chicagoan / Kansas City Chief. Side note, #14 became known as the “Fast 14” because it set the highest offical speed measured on the Santa Fe - 124 mph.

Back to your question.

The Walther’s Super Chief cars are for the 1952 onward train. The E6s were at least 5 years gone from that train by that time. However, the original Super Chief series (from 2004) had an incorrect sleeper in it. That was a car from the 1938 Super Chief, so it would be perfect for an E6. That is the 932-9005 Pullman 4-4-2 sleeper, Hotevilla Series car. They should be able to be found for cheap as all the Super Chief modeler’s have replaced them with genuine Regal series cars. The Budd 10-6 pine series from this set would generally have been after the E6s. But as the others have said Very few of the cars were restricted to certain trains, and then they were handed down each time the equipment was updated, so

This is just a suggestion but Athearn has budd cars for $24.00. They don’t have anything in them, and they arn’t chrome plated, but if you want a little project, well you can use spray cans with chrome plated color, and add some seats inside the car. I don’t know, I just wanted to mention it because no one else did.
