DO YOU EVER Talk to BOB KELLER,if so next time ask if anyone has ever put speaker(horn/bell)upright in any engine,yes i know they sound good,the way they are mounted now,in (fuel tank dept),but there are time i would like mine louder & there is room,but if they were mounted upright,thru fan area,i think it would be “VERY MUCH BETTER”,I WOULD LIKE TO TOOT MY ENGINE HORN & have people in the room or hall stand up and see where sound was coming from…AKA HUB
If yo uever want to annoy someone with the horns and whistles, here’s a plan:
Run two trains, one steam, one diesel.
Repeatedly play this pattern.
Two blasts on the whistle, followed by htree quick blasts on the horn. In less than five minutes, you will get a reraction from everyone within earshot. Believe me, it works!

you sound like my kind of train operator,what i did ,was to buy a SOUND B-UNIT,AND PROGRAM IT TO GO WITH MY ALCO C-420 D/H,THEN IF I WANT MORE,i have both steam & diesel boxcars, i also bought the steam tender,with great sounds,but lost couple that came with it ( for front),will have to look around see if maybe i can get another and run it in middle of the freight train…,but you gave me some-more very good idea’s,thanks “HUB”

I don’t know Bob personally. I am not a sound expert, but I do know that how a speaker is mounted can effect the sound from it. The configuration of the sounding chamber and how the speaker is attached will probably affect the tones out of the speaker. You may have to experiment a little until you get the sound you are happy with.

Lionel made a few diesel locomotives in the mid-1990s that had speakers facing upward. The one that comes to mind is the “stubby” version of the GE Dash 9 diesel (not the newer, scale-sized version.) The stubby diesel had the speaker mounted upright beneath the radiator grills on the rear part of the shell. You can see the openings through the grill that form a circle shape the size of the speaker, so for those folks who prize scale detail, this is not a very realistic look. The audio quality isn’t really any different (or louder) than diesels with fuel-tank speakers.

THANKS TO BOTH TIM & NEIL,BEING NOT TO FAR DRIVING TIME FROM “QSI”,MIGHT JUST GO DOWN AND HAVE A TALK WITH THEM,UNTILL THEN WHAT I HAVE DONE IS PROGRAM A DIESEL b-unit (sound only),as same # as my alco D/H,THAT HAS somewhat better effect,i also have both diesel & steam boxcars,so ill just play around and see what i come up with,to QSI,next year … HUB
