Personally I am not a fan of all the plastic kits and pre-built structures that seem to be the standard these days. I am just getting started again after 25 years absence from MRR and haven’t got to structures yet, but planning to kit-bash laser kits and scratch build as much as I can. So I have a real appreciation for your effort and final results.
You can definitely see the Atlas Water Tower in its design heritage, but it looks distinct enough to not look like another one of those green towers plopped down.
A fine-looking water tower you have there. The scratch building process imparts significant realism that a kit built structure can struggle to match. Thanks for sharing, and keep on posting.
When I read this, I rushed to hunt up my August Model Railroader, all excited. I am trying use “that auction site” to dispose of a bunch of train-set quality stuff somebody gave me. Selling at minimum prices and shipping, I have lots of time and no money. I have a Bachmann N scale water tower to dump. List price about $18, maybe I can sell for $2 or $3. But it is missing the spout.
I rushed to the article to see how to scratchbuild a spout for a water tower. No such luck. It says to use such-and-such a part. Costs money, and shipping.
I had been hoping for a SCRATCH building article…
When I try bending a piece of tubing, it crimps up. Maybe I can cut out a notch with a moto-tool, bend it and patch over the splice. And if it works, I could write an article on scratchbuilding SPOUTS!
