50th Anniversary of the standard guage link between Sydney and Melbourne, a loco haulded Southern Aurora special hauled by 4306,4490 and 44211. The 43 has a 244 series motor, with the other two 251’s. This was taken at Sydney Terminal Monday 16 April.
Hi Boyd, not too sure about that, as I live in NSW!! I think the yard is a lot smaller now due to that part of Melbourne being redeveloped a few times. I first went to Melbourne in the mid 90’s, and I have noticed a big change over the years. I am going on my annual trip there later this year for more photos, and hit a few shops!!!
First of all thanks for sharing your photos with us her on the Forums.
Many of us have never been to Australia, but enjoy viewing the railroads of ‘OZ’ via YouTube videos.
The export diesels shipped out of the US are pretty much of a mystery. I know Clyde Engineering built under patents of EMD and related companies. ALCO is pretty much of a mystery as they disappeared from US rails( except for a very few examples) many years back.
The only US rail examples of double ended diesels were some EMD sold to the commuter railroad Central of New Jersey.
ALCO passenger units were used pretty heavily on Passenger Trains ( ATSF and others). They ran their course and went away. There are very few examples of them left ( PA’s) the freight versions came and went as well (FA’s)
ALCO went through a number of partners to try and survive (Fairbanks-Morse/MLM/bombardier ( in Canada) to name a couple.
What they sold overseas is pretty much of a mystery here, as there was not a whole lot of press given to note much more than its demise from the North American rail scene. this link might be of some interest (some photo on the link as well:
