Boy Gets Hit By Freight Train, Lives
MANASSAS, Va. – Officials said a 6-year-old autistic boy from Manassas is lucky to be alive after being hit by a freight train over the weekend.
The incident happened on Saturday at about 4 p.m. at the intersection of Vulcan and Wellington roads near George Mason University’s Manassas campus.
Police said Alan Hernandez wandered away from his home and ended up on the train tracks. Authorities said he was headed home when the train hit him from behind.

If this kid has a guardian angel, that angel was certainly with him. Otherwise I should think he would not have survived this. I have friends here at home who’s son is also autistic, has a very limited vocabulary but also has a fascination for trains. I can understand this 6 year old taking a walk along a railroad track for that reason.

Our next-door neighbors’ oldest boy has both autism and Down’s Syndrome, and has very few language skills to speak of. A few times he’s gotten out the door un-noticed; in a couple of cases we were lucky to spot him running up the middle of the street. He now wears a tracking ankle bracelet and their doors have alarms that go off.
