Can anyone point me to the right web page to find some pics of a typical Autorack and intermodal facilities? Just trying to get ideas…J
jkroft have you tried a google search? or a search of the index of magazines at the top of the page here? some time back MR did a 2 part article on the auto industry and RRs.
also you may want to check out the kalmbach publishing book on model railroad intermodal operations, theres at least 1 track plan in there for a small intermodal yard.
these places would be a good starting point
hope this helps tom
Hello,
If you go to the web site
http://www.longislandintermodal.com/primermain.html
You’ll be able to download a PDF that is very detailed about an intermodal operation. I don’t know about an autorack facility, but this might be adaptable.
Also railpictures.net has some distant aerial shots of intermodal facilities…
Good luck.

Autorack facilities are pretty straight forward, they consist of one or more spurs and a parking lot. A ramp is positioned at the end of the track, and the cars are driven off. I’m pretty sure that the racks have bridges that go between cars, so multiple racks can be unloaded without repositioning the train.
That has to be a strange job as a driver doing the unloading, and reloading to trucks for distributuion. A lot of climbing and walking involved.
also in auto facilities bi level racks were on 1 track and tri level on another track

My railroad has an auto unloading facility which I don’t actually model, I just park the Autoracks on a siding. Then again, I do as much as I have room for. It’s a rather unique industry for a layout.
