Avalanche derails train in Switzerland

Earlier this afternoon an avalanche derailed a Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn passenger train near the summit of the Oberalp Pass east of Andermatt, Switzerland (This is the route of the Glacier Express). Two injured passenger had to be evacuated by the railway’s rotary snowplow to Andermatt. For those that can read German more here;

MGB Train Derailed

Interesting as the photograph shows a Rhaetische Bahn locomotive assisting the MGB train. What makes that interesting is the fact that the RhB locomotive is not equipped to operate on a rack railway, and there are two sections of rack between the RhB locomotive and home rails, one of which features 11% grades.

Also most highways over the passes in eastern Switzerland are closed, including the RhB’s Albula and Bernina lines. The only rail access to the Engadine Valley and St. Möritz is via the Vereina Tunnel.

Is this an indication of an early and heavy snow winter for the Alps??
