Awesome train show finds!!!!! (dial-up users beware!)

I ended up with some really great things at yesterday’s train show in Urbana, IL.[:D] And now I’d like to show some detailed pictures of what made me over-spend greatly.[:D]

First up is a brand-new Spectrum 0-6-0T.[:D]

This 0-6-0 is really tiny, and only weighs a few ounces, but it’s a very nice switcher.[:D]

Next is a new-in-box Kato GP35 Phase 1a.[:D]

That’s why I miss the shows…that Westside is sweet looking. Great find there.

Congratulations on the brass steamer looks real nice. I hope your gonna paint it!

Last is the one that broke the bank. A Westside/Samhongsa Modern 4-4-0, my very first brass engine![:D]

I just happened to run across this while I was looking at stuff on the brass table, and really wanted to get it, even though I new it was way out of my price range. A little bit later, the guy selling it walked up to me and said if I was interested, he would take $180 instead of the $275 he wanted before. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.[:D] After a good tune-up, this thing runs very smoothly, and it’s almost completely silent.[:D] The 5-pole coreless motor runs gr

Great purchases. Out of curiosity how much was the Spectrum 0-6-0 tank engine? I do not have one but am looking for one, should have got one when they were in production and they were available all over at the time.

PS - Word to New Haven 1-5 when you quote a post with pictures it really slows down the download connection. Why quote and duplicate the pics? Also take note from what was included in the title.

[#ditto],no need.

Lillen, I’m going to leave the 4-4-0 in its brass color, since I like the look of the shiny brass.[:D]

New Haven I-5, I’m pretty sure the guy who sold me the 4-4-0 is only local, since it originally belonged to a friend of his who died last year. Of course, I guess there’s always a possibility he’ll show up there too.

don7, the 0-6-0T was only $40, and as far as I know, had never been out of the box.[:D]

You can still use the “Quote” function when necessary: simply click on each photo while in your composition window, then hit “Delete” - this is also useful for eliminating extraneous conversation when replying to only a certain part of a Post, as I did here with the first part of don7’s reply. Nice finds indeed! Thanks for sharing 'em with us…

That brass engine looks like a PRR D Class 1223 used by Strasburg RR until she was placed into the PRR Museum.

It is the 1223!

So have you instantly become a modler of the Great Northern Railway or Pennsy?

For some od reason I do not blame you! I think it’s lovely as it is. But… [:D]

Darth–

The coreless motors in the later Westside Korean models WERE a little under-powered. Check with NWSL, for a drop-in replacement. Should give that beautiful little Pennsy 4-4-0 the gumption it needs. That’s a gorgeous loco. I’ve also found with a lot of used brass that I’ve bought, that rebalancing and adding a little weight over the front set of drivers really increases the tractive effort without overpowering the motor.

Have fun. You made out like a Bandit!

It doesnt add to the DL time as it uses the same pic links, but it sure spreads out the thread!

If someone has a lengthy post if I quote it I usually snip out extra stuff and focus on what I am quoting on.

Good looking brass. Reminds me of the Bonhamie and Gettysburg. Good looking engine running down that branch.

I just went to the SJV club show and I picked up some goodies and good deals.

Mostly I was looking for anything that suits what my layout is doing.

I found, about 7 35 foot hopper cars no trucks or couplers no lettering, 1 dollar each. I can do the rest. DEAL!!!

I went ahead and bought the red N&W Atlas caboose with the newer N&W emblem, I will blank it out the logo for my period.

All rail #6 Walthers turnout, 15 bucks.

1 virginian 35 hopper and 1 N&W 35 foot hopper.

One vender had some of these animated signs, some with a flag of something, another some store sign, BUT…

Flashing away was this Illinois Central animated sign, virtually a duplicate you saw when you drive into Chicago back in the early days, it hovered near the IC tracks or over it. 35 bucks. DEAL!!! That was soo cool. I’ll be modeling the IC electric so it fits sooo perfectly.

For my little N scale experiment, I bought this 30 degree crossing to vary the layout a little, BUT…

in a box was a bunch of N scale track and turnouts, 100 bucks. A LOT of them, 3 ganged ladder switches, 1 3 way switch, and a bunch of turnouts. I hemmed and hawed and looked at other things while as I walked by it again, poked around in it, will I really do this? If I buy this it means I go a little more serious on the N scale. Its the best deal of the show pricewise, so I

I agree with the need for a Can Motor to put into the 1223, I recall her in memory running really well and you aint going to get that with a old two pole motor or whatever it is they jam into those old model engines.

I have already said in the past how well it ran when I saw it as a child, and I would think with a good quality motor you can get the same out of that model.

twhite, I have found a couple motors that could be good replacements, and one of them is small enough that I could even add a small flywheel in there.[:D] I checked the balance over the drivers, and it seems to be just fine.

dinwitty, sounds like you had a good day at your train show!

Falls Valley RR, the motor used is excellent quality, and has great low speed control, near silent running, and almost no current draw. As mentioned before, it’s a 5-pole coreless type. The only problem is the lack of power for an HO engine. It would be great in an N scale engine.

[soapbox] Really nice stuff Darth, I envy. We here in Erie have two train shows a year, but none of the big ones (Greensburg, WGH, etc.) Seller attendance depends on the weather, as the “spring” show is usually in early March which here is still SNOW time. Most of the dealers are rigid on prices and seem to look down their nose at you if you offer less than their asking price unless there is visible rust or damage on the locomotive-you can do better through Walther’s a lot of the time. Oh for the big shows.[banghead]

You know why you got such a good deal yesterday right? Because all of those Illini fans were anxious to get out of there to watch the Badger/Illini game. Who knows what depths you could have taken him too if you would have held out till 4:30.

Seriously nice finds. A point with the 0-6-0. It’s very good, but our club has had the usual problems with short wheel bases and long frogs. However on Peco’s power routing turnouts they work pretty well.
