B&O Ballast Color

I’m just about ready to start ballasting my HO layout. I “loosely” model the B&O in the 50’s and 60’s. Since I now live in CA, I don’t have any tracks to go look at for the proper color :>) Any suggestions? Color, size, and Brand? Thanks George

If you don’t mind looking at a whole bunch of photos, with perhaps a few in colour, you might try this site: (look for the B&O in the alphabet list in blue, and “Steam Locomotives” links once you find B&O.)

I am looking for the same thing as the OP. It is hard to tell the exact color from the pictures. Is there an arizona rock and mineral color that matches well?

Living near the old B&O line between DC and Baltimore I would say the medium gray which Arizona lists for CSX, Wabash and Espee.

I would pick the varigated gray mixtures. Or mix light, medium and dark grays to make a mixed batch.
