B&O caboose

I would like to build a model of Chessie/B&O caboose C3051. This is one of those homemade jobs. It looks pretty simple but after trying two different ways both attemps wound up in the trash can. First I tried using an Athearn bay window caboose because it had windows molded into the sides. Next I tried using a block of wood and covered with Evergreen styrene embossed with rivets. This project is too easy not to do, but I can’t seem to come up with a satisfactory way to do it. If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks
Jim

Jim:

Regardless of which route you take, scratching or bashing, its VITAL you be able to make EXACT 90 degree cuts and seams.

See the current issue of Modelrailroader (January 2004) page 36 for a discussion of the basic tools you will require.

Also, an online article ‘Building a Transfer Caboose’ ( www.trains.com/content/dynamic/articles/000/000/000/964hzhck.asp ) will walk you through the process of modifing an existing kit and fabricating structures from styrene.

Good luck and have fun.
