S Helper has 2-8-0 coming out in S scale. Quote from their web site:
The first steam locomotive entering the Showcase Line is modeled after the Baltimore and Ohio Class E-27 2-8-0. The originals were built in 1905 by the Richmond Locomotive Works, later part of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). This loco featured a straight boiler and 62" drivers.
A Proto 2000 USRA 0-6-0 would make for a nice switcher. Bachmann also has the most extensive line of steam among all the HO manufacturers. Check their web site for B & O models.
Athearn made the USRA 2-8-2 and 4-6-2, the B&O had a lot of those type engines and you can still find them at some shops and on E-Bay.
Rivarossi made the Class S 2-10-2, although not a good runner it could be improved upon. These were imported by AHM later IHC but should be availiable on E-Bay.
Proto 2000 makes the USRA 2-8-8-2, the B&O removed the trailing truck making them into 2-8-8-0’s and the vanderbilt tender from the 2-10-2 available seperately would make a credible B&O locomotive.
The 0-4-0T Docksider was a B&O locomotive available from a lot of vendors.
The Manuta Pacific is very close to a B&O P1 or P2 Pacific.
I am very surprised noone mentioned the Rivarossi 2-6-6-6 Allegheny which is supposed to be a fine locomotive in every respect or was that from the C&O?
You didn’t mention brass. The Akane B&O P-7 4-6-2, Q-4b 2-8-2 and EM-1 2-8-8-4’s show up on ebay frequently at high-end plastic prices. They were bullet proof runners and looked okay for their day. A few detail changes would make them very good buys.
There is almost everything available in brass for the Beano fan.
The Mantua/Tyco Pacific was a B&O P-7 class after they were modernized.
And not to get too off-topic but the EM-1 was by Baldwin. Most steam articulated models in today’ s plastic are based on Alco prototypes so any Baldwin models of articulated locos would be greatly received in the MRR community…not only in B&O but WM, D&H, Lehigh, Reading and other numerous western RRs.
Come to think of it; the first mallet in the USA, the 0-6-6-0 ‘Old Maude’ appeared on the B&O…a slow freght/drag helper…Gee with DCC, sound,…now that would be another whole line of modeling.
Rivarossi did a B&O 2-8-8-0 it comes uo from time to time on Ebay, if you are the patient type try waiting for the later production version with the RP25 flanged wheels and the motor in the boiler. The S-2 Class 2-10-2 comes up more often and you can get it for a reasonable price.
The new Precision Craft Models have listed the P7, President series as one of their new products coming to the market in the next year. This should be like the one at the B&O museum.
The BLI Light Mike OUTPERFORMS the Athearn 2-8-2 in many ways.
I have had both engines and while the Athearn engine was really smooth as silk it could not pull anything. The BLI Heavy Mike filled the bill at 17 cars up a 3% grade.
Some manufactors such as IHC offers engines such as the 4-6-4 in B&O… I strongly suspect that is not prototypical.
The B&O Life Like Heritage switcher 0-6-0 is OOP But I will post a picture of it later today.
