Bachman E-Z Command!!!

Today i got DCC[:D] I got the Bachman system for $65. I think it is a good deal?? anybody use this system? The only thing I dont like about it is you can only have 10 locos[V] How hard is it to install decoders in Atlas N scale locos[?] I have the MRC synchro sound to go with it so that should be fun[:)] Tim

Tim,

For $65, you got a decent price. I found mine for $53.

I use the Bachmann E-Z Command and have for over a year now. It’s a good, inexpensive, no-frills DCC system - but it is limited. You can’t adjust the configuration variables (CVs) with it. However, along with addressing and turning on the headlights, you can access 8 sound functions with the E-Z Command:

F1 - Bell
F2 - Whistle
F3 - Coupler
F4 - Steam hiss
F5 - Dynamic breaking
F6 - Doppler (only works over 40 MPH)
F7 - Break squeal/flanges
F8 - Mute

F10 - Lights

Tim, I model HO so I don’t have any experience with installing decoder in N-scale locomotives. I will be a challenge, to say the least, but possible.

Tom

hello…i have been using the ez command for about 2 wks now and i really enjoy it…i have installed 5 digitrax n scale decoders without problems in my ho stuff…my febble brain can handle only 3 trains running at one time…i can’t imagine running more then 10…thanks…tishman

Hi Tim,

Tom about covered the E-Z Command, wouldn’t you say?

I’ll jump id on the decoder install thing.

If I remember right, you’re doing the D word thing and not steam. Diesel’s are pretty easy by comparisson. Some of the newer loco’s are set up as a plug-n-play just like HO. You just replace the light board and you’re off. Others you have to solder a decoder in. The trick here is to get a soldering iron with a fine tip to get into those smaller spaces. Also, you may need a dremel to hog out a bit of the weight so that you have somewhere to put the decoder. If you’re concerned about losing the weight you can get some of that mouldable lead stuff from the LHS and fill it back up.

Now for steam it gets to be a bit more challenging. Big steam has a great big hollow tender behind it. Not much of a problem there. Stuff in a decoder and run the wires,…done. Small steam though is where the fun begins. It usually involves romoving some of the weight, which only aggrivates the inherant shortcomings of small steam from the get go.

Do some searches on the web for more detailed info on your particular loco. Theres lots of info out there.

And hey, let us know how you came out, OK?

Thanxs guys!!! So all i have to do is pop out the light board and replace it with a decoder?? I was thinking of (when done the n scale) building a Ho layout and placeing the E-Z Command on it while buying a more expensive DCC system. I really like those nice sound equiped Ho locos at the LHS or train show. Tim
