Back when I was able to run mine ( had both Lionel and Bachman ) in both daylight as well as Freedon Train and they both ran very well. I had the complete Freedom Train as done by lionel to run behind the GS4 done up in Freedon Train colors, and a seven or eight car passenger train set to run behind the Bachman GS 4 done up in daylight and they both were very good pullers as my old layout had some grades for them to climb, so if you can get one to run as good as mine did, you wont go wrong. O I still have mine ( I think ) it’s just due to bad health I havn’t been up stairs to my train room in about 5 years

  • ONLY with an $80 Bowser mechanism inside.Dont want to spend $125? - avoid.

Clue:" THIS IS NOT THE PLUS FRAME AND MOTOR "

Even Bachmann had to re-engineer this chassis.

Had no reason to change mine out, but Bowser makes a good running gear for the Lionel/ Bachman GS4 that is very reasonable price, I looked into it one time as an option should mine quit running good.

Looked at the one on eBay, if you can get it for the 37. that it was going for at the time I looked you wont go wrong even if you get one that has problems, and you have to remotor it, so go for it.
PS. I also had the number moved to the correct position also on one of my Freedon train engines but havn’t got the other one done yet, The freedon train people moved the number boards to the front, while SP had them in the middle, and eBay engine has already had that done.

Like I said about DCC.
I have had a bad exerience with anything Bachman. I had a 0-6-0 that never has run well. And the freight cars I have are pretty useless. No matter how much better their Spectrum line is supossed to be I won’t buy it, if you can’t make something medium priced work. I’m going to spend more money and you say it will work? I have not tried much of their stuff so don’t take my word for it.

And like gtirr says:

Lotus098 says it all…
The only good thing botchman offers is a warranty and you WILL need it eventually!
I would rather have ANYTHING but a botchman!!!
If that’s you can afford, you’ll be much happier in another hobby.

I don’t know about the GS-4. Hope this helps.

If it is in one piece , relatively cheap (price), buy it . If it is the older “pancake motored” version it is a “work of art”(heavy sarcasm),BOWSER makes a re-power kit for it that I highly recommend, just make sure you get the proper kit for your type of tender (different size wheels).
