Bachmann 2-6-0 and DCC

For around the tree this year, I’m going simple and straight-forward (or so it always starts [:D]). Sticking with EZ-Track, I’m using the Bachman North Pole Express. It looks nice with the Ceramic village buildings, etc. Last year was just a simple loop. This year I’m adding a second loop, a siding or two and at least two more trains. I figured since I have the equipment (Digitrax) that I’d convert these engines to DCC. However, the response from Bachmann isn’t encouraging:

Am I right in assuming that means it’s still possible, but with a lot more work? I remember reading some articles in MR about converting older locomotives to DCC, would that apply in this case or do I need a whole new motor, etc. I havn’t torn the case off yet…might do so tonight just to see what I’m dealing with. Everything I’ve added DCC to-date has been “plug and play”. Looking for some feedback, maybe a few links to some walk-thrus?
Thanks, Ed

As far as I can tell, any engine can be converted to DCC. The trick is to isolate the poles on the engine from the frame. This is harder on some engines than others. In some cases this might involve taking the drive wheels off steamers. This can be fun to get back together. Often a tech will turn down a job if it is too labor intensive to make it worth the bid price of the job.

I have a web article about putting DCC in the On30 Mogul. It takes about twenty minutes.

This would be a good place to start…

I think it would be possible, but how difficult and what it would entail, I have no idea. Often, you have to insulate the motor from the frame. You would also have to find a decoder that would fit in the little tender on it. Probably an “N” sized decoder. Then there is the subject of whether the power draw if of the loco might be too much for the N sized decoder. How good are you at soldering little tiny wires? Not trying to discourage you here (Hmmm, maybe I am…). If you are only going to operate this train at the Holidays, and it will not be a part of your main layout, I think you would be well off to just use DC with this as you would not really gain anything (except experience, of course) by doing the conversion.

Thanks for the info. That’s what I thought I’d have to do. As for why DCC and not just plain DC – I’m doing it for experience. My goal is have the setup “hands-off” via Laptop or PC control. I bought the DCC equipment in anticipation for my future “permanent” layout to help me plan and learn. I figure this is a good way to start.
