This coming Wednesday I’ll be receiving a Tsunami decoder, speaker and conversion plug from Tony’s Trains. Any advice on installing it? Also any comments from anyone who has a Bachmann 2-8-0 with a Tsunami installed? thanks
Shouldn’t be problem as I put in a Soundtraxx LC plug and play unit two years ago. Though if I was to put in a Tsunami I’d rip the circuit board out plug and all and wire it rectly to the pick ups, lights and motor. The “Plug and Play” needed Mods when I installed it. Namely I removed the chokes and capacitors as they were stalling the unit intermittantly.

[#ditto] I’ve got one of these, and several other Bachmann steamers. I see no sense in keeping any of the built-in circuitry – I cut it all off and wired directly to the decoder. My 2-8-0 had an earlier Soundtraxx, and I’ve replaced it now with a Tsunami medium. It runs like a champ, and now sounds even better. You cannot go wrong with a Tsunami!
The “conversion plug” Tony is sending is probably a short wiring harness with an NMRA 8-pin plug on one end and a JST plug on the other. The Tsunami comes with a solder-in wiring harness. In order to change the harness, you will need to carefully cut away some of the shrink wrap from that end of the decoder.
If the engine runs backwards after the decoder is installed, turn the plug around.
Fergie, when you change the system out would you be able to post some PIC of how you did it? I have a few Bachmanns that I would like to added decoders and sound too as well.
