Can anyone tell me why Bachmann only produced combine/baggage cars and coaches in their lighted 65’ heavyweight Santa Fe series in the late 70s and early 80s, and why do they all have the same numbers ?..

That was the days when manufacturers thought we wouldn’t know any better. Look at the other stuff from the same era if you have any doubts.
They also made an observation car and diner, but they have basically the same ends and sides.
But the cars are pretty decent kitbash bait: JinJ Trains makes a whole series of brass car sides and resin roofs, which use the Bachmann heavies as their “core”.
