Bachmann 70 tonner

I just purchased one of these models and I’m wondering what to expect. Do they run better than the older models?

They pretty good runners, my friend has one and their a good deal for the price, cant compare them to older runs because I havent ran any of them but im assuming its improved.

Don’t you hate it when after you buy something for one price, someone posts a link like this?

The day after one buys an item for a certain price the store they bought item from will have a sale on said item–Thornton’s Axiom

I’m of the opinion that the 70 tonner is a good runner–I have no quibbles with the one I got a few weeks ago from a clearance sale at an LHS up here…

[banghead]LOL! That figures.

Yep. The Favorite Spot on Ebay has the best prices on Bachmann stuff I’ve found. I got an E mail from the owner saying they still accept checks and money orders too.[tup]

I have that exact one [in the ebay photos], use it in my steel mill. Runs kinda loud, but for the $37 price I paid at my LHS, I’m not complaining![^]

Agree Loathar, I have purchased many locos from them, they are a class act and always my first place to go when in the market for a loco. [tup]

I purchased one about a year ago – it didn’t run very well, so I did the usual gear cleaning / adjusting and it still didn’t run very well. Then I had the bright idea to dump the Bachman decoder and put in a Digitrax. Voila! It ran like a champ. If your engine doesn’t run well or is “jerky”, try a new decoder.

IIRC, the decoder that comes with the loco only supports a 14-step speed table. I’ll swap mine out for a 128-step decoder when I feel more ambitious.

I am not familiar with the older version, but my DCC 70 tonner runs smoothly.

Tom

Why bother having more steps? Most all prototype American diesel-electric locomotives had/have few speed steps (Baldwins being the major exception had infinite speed settings). Your replacement decoder, I’m sorry to say, is less prototypical than the one you replaced. I presume the original decoder allowed for adjusting the speed range and reaction time between throttle commands.

LOL! I beat those prices…When I got mine I paid $29.95 from Wholesale Trains…
