I have 2 of the Bachmann B23-7 locos and need to clean and lub the gears. How does the shell come off or do I need to remove the trucks? How do I go about cleaning the gears?
Is there such a thing as a tech manual for different locos? How did you learn how to do maintaince on your locos? I would like to learn to do this rather than send them off for maintaince. Thanks, Mike
Like the diagram shows. Remove the 2 screws on the bottom of the fuel tank and pull the tank off. You will see 2 more screws under the tank. These hold the shell on. You have to remove the truck side frames to get at the gears. BE CAREFUL! It’s EZ to break the side frame mounts when you pop them off.
I disassemble the trucks completely and clean them with hot water, dish soap and a toothbrush. Grease, oil and reassemble.
There is a tab on the the front and back of each side frame assembly. You need to use a small straight slot screw driver and pop one end off. The side frames will then come off the truck and expose the gears. There are no bearings. The axles just snap into the truck housing. You can just pull them out with your fingers.
A desire to try is usually all that is required to repair an engine. Most repairs are very simply, very basic. The lower priced Bachmann is a good model to learn on.
Follow Loathars instructions and you will do fine.
Thanks to all and especially loather, I got them off and lubed the gears and cleaned the pick-up fingers. I did not remove the gears themself, I didn’t want to get into something I would be sorry for later. Thanks again for the help. Mike
For future reference. If you need to remove the motor, there’s a little trick to it. See the 2 wish bone shaped motor hold downs in the diagram? If you look at the bottom where the fuel tank screws thread in, there’s 2 plastic wedges that spread those wishbones apart holding them tight in place.(wedges are not shown in the diagram) You first need to pull these wedges out from the bottom with tweezers or needle nose pliers before you can pull the wishbones out from the top freeing the motor. It drove me frickin crazy trying to get the motor out for the first time.
By the way, I emailed Larry at HOSeeker, and he said he’s been getting so much spam that he’s been banning suspicious IP’s in scattershot fashion, and I was a casualty. He reconfigured his spam blocker, and now I can access it again, so contact him you should encounter the same problem.
