I am thinking of installing a Bachmann crossover in my layout (a double oval). Can I run DC trains simultaneously on the two tracks in opposite directions, or do I need special wiring?

Special wiring will be needed. Potentially modifications to crossover.
In order to run two trains in opposite directions on two tracks, you will need two controllers and the two tracks must be totally isolated from each other electrically.
If you try to cross from one track to the other while running in opposite directions, you will create a dead short.
I’m not at all familiar with any Bachmann track products and have no experience with their crossover to know whether or not it is properly insulated to prevent a short between the two tracks, and Bachmann’s web site provides no technical details about the crossover.
