I have this system currently, although I’m growing out of it so it will be soon replaced. It’s a good starter system and it’s hard to beat the price. It does what it says it will do, but not much else. It’s a bit limited on power but BMann is supposed to release a new booster soon. They have some other things in the works too.
Thanks for the links. I have actually already seen them. I also just read the December 2005 DCC review in MR last night! However, I remember reading a review in the “Product review” section where they checked it out. Since I don’t have many of the 2005 issues, I only want to purchase the loose one that I need. Thanks again though! (And if you want to see your system soon, let me know what you might want for it.)
I don’t recall seeing that review. I did find this one on the MRR web site for the MRC Prodigy Advance which is a compeditor to the Bachmann system. It’s quite a bit more capable, but has a bit larger price tag.
Is there any way to program Bachmann Decoders on a Digitrax Controller? Some of my Decoders are Bachmann and most are Digitrax. I purchased a John Deere Diesel which came prebuilt with a Bachmann Decoder and I’m somewhat limited as to what I can do with it. I’m very new at all of this and feel lost much of the time. My layout is only a few weeks old.
Yes the digitrax DCC system will program a bachmann decoder and visa versa. You may not be able to program it on the bachmann DCC system and then run it on the Digitrax system because the systems dont have to use the same “language”. All decoders that are NMRA approved will work on all NMRA approved DCC systems. That does not mean that one station has to store the address the same as the other just that the stations must be able to talk to and write to decoders. Now some features that your digitrax decoders have may not be able to be set on the Bmann DCC unit and the Bmann Decoders may not be able to do some of the stuff that the Digitrax decoders can. You would have to look at the manuals to figure that out.
I don’t think you can do any programing on the bachmann system. You can program on the digitrax system and then run the loco’s on the Bmann and it will recognize the changes.
I don’t know about the Bmann decoders though as I run only Digitrax decoders right now.
I’ll be curious to see how these hold value in the resale market. Considering the features still exceed those of a DC controller, I’ve got to imagine they should hold a high percentage of their original cost. Better than 50% would be my guess.
