bachmann freight cars

good night all.
i have some bachmann silver range cars, they are very poor runners, i weighed one and found it was 3.25 ozs. for a 7 inch car, it seemed crazy. the nmra standard is one oz per inch i think plus an extra 1/2 oz. this would give an all up weight 7 and 1/2 oz … is this right.

best wishes from patrick in ireland.

The NMRA weight recommendation is one ounce plus an additional 1/2 ounce for each inch of car length, so a 7 inch car should be 4.5 ounces. I have many of the Bachmann Silver Series depressed center flat cars with 6 axles and have never had a problem with any of them except for changing the coupler.

Hmmmm? I thought it was 1 oz for the first inch and 1/2 for each additional inch. I guess I better re-weigh all 400 cars!

I’ve heaps of Bachmann SS cars, they run really nice over some pretty rough track. Have you checked the wheels are all ok in gauge etc.

Ken.

thank you cacole, i now have the picture,i will buy an nmra gauge to test wheel sets ,than you all for the help.

Walter, recheck your formula. I’d hate to see you go through all that. It’s NOT 1 oz. for the first inch + 1/2 for each additonal inch. You take a base weight of 1 oz. + 1/2 oz. for each inch, not each additional inch.

For a 7 1/2" long car, I’ll show you the difference.

Your formula:
1 oz. for the first inch + 1/2 oz. x 6 1/2 additional inches= 4.25 oz.

NMRA formula
1 oz. base weight + 1/2 oz x 7 1/2 inches= 4.75 oz.

Hope this helps…

Medina - I like to think that I don’t make mistakes, I thought I made a mistake, but I was mistaken, I hadn’t. I was using your formula, I just hadn’t done it in a while. I went down to the “train room” and decided to weigh a few cars. I was using your correct formal I just remembered wrong. Glad to hear (read) you are getting better.

i love the bachmann siver series. they have all worked good for me.
