Bachmann glued on hand rails

I have a bunch of the Bachmann GP 35 and 30 shells that I would like to strip and repaint…the Delrin handrails are glued on and no solvent seems to loosen them - even MEK.

I have two questions…

1.What do I use to dissolve the existing glue?

2.Where do I get this glue that seems to work great on Delrin plastic?

It’s amazing the MEK didn’t do some damage. I’ve always used a tiny amount of CA to fasten the plastic hand rails.

Maybe CA was used originaly. Maybe try Acetone. It will remove super glue.

Will Acetone also start to strip the paint? I would try just a drop first, from the underside of the shell.

Is acetone styrene safe?

There are products specifically made to unglue ACC. They are spectacular paint removers too, DAMHIK

I’d be very cautious using acetone, it can damage certain plastics. If you choose to try it, test it in a hidden area first to see if there’s an adverse reaction.

Well, he tried MEK, and I tried it ONCE to remove some stubborn paint, and I ended up with a melted hole in the body shell.

MEK is more distructive to plastic than acetone.

Acetone is reccomended for removing CA, from skin, and tools.

And as far as paint, that’s why he wants to remove the hand rails, so he can strip and repaint.

Lets just all freak out! [:O]

Rather then risk ruining my health by using chemicals I would just do like the prototype… I just paint the engine with handrails in place…

Ya know whats strange, I was just on the Bachmann site, and they don’t even list hand rails as a part, and all of the shells they offer, have the handrails on.

Here’s a thread from the past that deals with the same problem.

Wow! That must be some pretty powerful stuff. I’ve never used it before, and don’t know that much about it, but I’ll have to remember to be extra careful with it if I ever need to use it.

I, and many other modelers, use MEK for a cement for building with styrene.

It made a mess of the side of the loco I was using it on. I knew better, just trying everything I could to remove the last tiny bit of paint. [:O]

I had another shell, so no big loss.
